Karen Lau, a Hong Kong-based clinical psychologist with mental health initiative Mind HK, said addressing mental health in Asia comes with unique challenges.
“In Asian contexts, many cultures tend to uphold values such as honor, pride, and a concept of face,” she said. “Mental illness is usually viewed and judged as a sign of weakness and a source of shame for the family.”

“Mental health needs, unlike physical health, can be trickier to detect because of the seemingly invisible presentation of these symptoms. The entrenched stigma of mental illness in Asian societies makes it even more challenging for these needs to be addressed,” said Karen Lau, MSF Mental Health Supervisor.

Supporting someone with BPD can be distressing, though. Make sure you’re aware of your own limits, and take a break when you feel you need to.
“Frame this as your own self-care and part of a healthy relationship – not a rejection or criticism,” Lau adds. “Your own self-acceptance and self-care is a powerful model for the person you are supporting.”
